Problem Statement

African American families in the Northeast often have deep historical connections to the Southern states, shaped by the profound experiences of the Civil War and the Great Migration. However, a disconnect has emerged between these communities and their Southern roots, hindering a comprehensive understanding of their ancestral heritage. Many individuals lack the knowledge, resources, and opportunities to explore their family history and connect with the places and people that shaped their ancestors' lives. This disconnection has contributed to a weakened sense of identity, limited access to cultural resources, and reduced opportunities for intergenerational learning within these communities.

Project Description

The Roots and Routes program aims to address this critical gap by providing African American families in the Northeast with opportunities to explore their Southern heritage through a comprehensive and immersive experience. The program will offer a multifaceted approach, including:

  • Curriculum Development: Creating age-appropriate educational materials that delve into the history of the Civil War, the Great Migration, and the African American experience. These resources will be made available to schools, community centers, and families.

  • Educational Trips: Organizing guided tours to significant historical sites in the South, such as Civil War battlefields, plantations, and museums. These trips will provide participants with firsthand experiences and opportunities to learn from historians and local experts.

  • Genealogy Workshops: Offering workshops to assist participants in tracing their family history and connecting with their Southern roots. Experienced genealogists will provide guidance and support throughout the process.

  • Cultural Exchange Programs: Facilitating connections between African American communities in the Northeast and the South through virtual and in-person cultural exchange programs. These initiatives will foster a sense of community and shared heritage.

  • Community Partnerships: Collaborating with schools, historical societies, and community organizations to promote the program and provide additional support services. These partnerships will strengthen the program's impact and reach.

By providing access to education, historical sites, and cultural experiences, the Roots and Routes program will empower participants to discover their ancestral roots, strengthen family bonds, and contribute to the revitalization of their communities.
